Spotsylvania, Virginia
This field was the site of some of the fiercest fighting of the entire American Civil War. Here, at "The Bloody Angle," The Army of The Potomac and The Army of Northern Virginia locked horns in deadly combat at close quarters during the period May8 through May 21, 1864. Both armies suffered a severe mauling at the hands of the other. While the battle could only be called a stalemate, after its conclusion, U.S. Grant continued to plod inexorably southward.
