Male Ruby Throated Hummingbirds

The first three pictures here are of mature male birds. While the "ruby" red throat is obvious enough, pay close attention to the shape of the tail feathers as well. Males have a somewhat forked tail while females have a rounded fan-shaped tail. Additionally, the females have pronounced white on the tail-tip feathers. Compare the first three images of males to the fourth image on this page which is a female bird. These characteristics are apparent in immature birds as well, making it possible to distinguish immature males, who lack the red throat gorget, from females.
