Yellowstone Elk 1998

I heard elk bugling shortly after I entered the park . . . long before I actually saw any. That was quite a thrill! After a few days however, I had encountered so many, and many were so tame, that I quickly became as jaded as they were.

This fellow was very wary of me. I caught him while he was attempting to cross the road early on a very drab morning in late September. He was one of the first animals I saw in the park.

The two pictures that follow are of "tame" elk. There were many of these in the vicinity of Mammoth Hot Springs. I have seen TV shows documenting the problems these animals pose in Canada's Banff National Park. The shows have run footage demonstrating very aggressive behaviour . . . virtual "attacks" on humans encroaching too closely. During my visit I did not witness anyone foolishly approaching these animals so closely as to provoke any response. These two were photographed from a very safe distance with an 800mm lens and a 1.4X converter. The cow is merely chewing her cud. In truth these guys all seemed pretty placid but I would not want one of them to get angry at me! They look like deer but seem to be almost the size of moose!
