Downy Woodpecker

I was refilling the suet feeder and had taken it inside the house while doing so. When I returned to rehang it, one of these fellows swooped towards me and, much to my astonishment, landed, not on the feeder in my hands, but on my pant leg! He clung there a few moments and, apparently taken aback by his own audacity, flew off to the nearby trees and waited for me to rehang the feeder.

Hairy Woodpecker

It is difficult to understand the difference between the downy and hairy woodpeckers until you see them in an environment that makes the size difference readily apparent . . . such as on a small suet feeder. The downy perches daintily on the feeder while the much larger hairy overwhelms it!
