Cranefly 2002

These are the insects that we see flitting about clumsily in late summer, often rising out of the grass before our feet as we walk on our lawns. Recall they are tiny, often thought of as big "mosquitoes" although they are quite harmless and do not bite at all. In fact, despite these voracious-looking mouth parts, in this stage of their lives they do not even feed!

Still, they look ferocious at this magnification!

Photographed with a Canon D60 camera using an EF180mm f3.5 L macro lens. The lens was fitted with a 1.4X tele extender and two additional extension tubes to achieve this magnification. Exposure was by a 550ex speedlight at 1/250 sec, f16 and ISO 200.
