Little Round Top, Gettysburg, 1997

General G.K. Warren, "Hero of Little Round Top"

Many are familiar with the role played in the defense of Little Round Top by Joshua L. Chamberlain's Twentieth Maine Regiment from the motion picture "Gettysburg." Few appreciate that it was the Chief Engineer of the Army of The Potomac, General Gouverneur K. Warren who first discovered the vulnerability of the Union Army to flank attack if the Confederates occupied this height of land. He ordered Col. Strong Vincent, Chamberlain's commanding officer to defend Little Round Top. The 20th Maine took their position on Col. Vincent's order. Gen. Warren's statute, shown below, now stands atop Little Round Top looking down into "The Valley of Death."
